New Ireland, Papua New Guinea
2017 PHOTO COMPETITION WINNER
This picture was taken during my time in Papua New Guinea, travelling the island province of New Ireland. I started at the northernmost point on the island, and, without hotel reservations, asked around and found a family willing to let me stay with them. When it was time to move on, the family told me they had relatives further south I should stay with. This pattern repeated itself for the entire five months I was travelling. This is one from a collection of photos of the same hospitable, extended family all along the beautiful coastline of New Ireland

Happiness Is Hard Work.
Teddy Roosevelt’s assertion in his Labor Day speech 109 years ago still rings true, “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing”. The photo is very much personal for me as I truly believe that hard work always pays off. After having a small conversation with the seller in the photography, who was 79 years old, I was more inspired to work hard and be self-reliant.

Petra, Jordan
One finds the treasury at Petra by winding down a narrow slot canyon among a throng of international tourists until emerging to find the incredibly well preserved structure. Or, if you prefer, you can ride an "air-conditioned donkey" or camel to get there a little faster.
Mount Sabyinyo, Rwanda
Mount Sabyinyo, Rwanda
A group of Rwandan traditional Intore dancers holds a ceremony in front of Mount Sabyinyo in Northern Rwanda. “Sabyinyo” is derived from the Kinyarwandan word meaning “tooth.” This extinct volcano is part of the Virunga Mountain range. Half of all the biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa can be found in Virunga national park.
Kathmandu, Nepal
Kathmandu, Nepal
This picture was taken during the Maha Shivaratri celebration at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. I chanced upon this family who wanted their photo taken. It was very spontaneous but at the same time very natural.

The Comuna 13 neighborhood in Medellin – formerly one of the most dangerous areas in the city – has been gradually transforming thanks to a blossoming street art culture and the installation of new technology such as escalators to facilitate movement throughout the neighborhood.
Agra, India

I believe rain, in its own way, to be a meeting of heaven with earth. The two boys strengthened my belief. The thunderstorm after a hot summer day in Agra, India had made everyone happy. But these boys had something else on their mind! Nothing beats taking your shirt off and dancing in rain! And always make this meeting of heaven with earth a special one.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
More than one million people visit Angkor Wat every year. Early each morning hundreds of tourists crowd around the reflecting pools in front of the temple complex to photograph the sunrise over the towers, jostling and fighting for the same picture they can find on giftshop postcards in their hotel. On the other side of the main walls, you'll find the temple complex silent, completely free of tourists. The interior is still, aside from the slowly increasing illumination from the rising sun, punctuated by a single local dog and children from the nearby wat preparing for the day.
This photo was taken while riding in a rickshaw through the insane traffic in Dhaka’s extremely busy Sadarghat Market.
