Cambodia has made impressive strides in reducing open defecation over the last decade. Sanitation marketing has played an important role in increasing the ownership and use of toilets in rural areas, but challenges remain in reaching the poorest households and in moving further up the sanitation ladder.

“Toilet Revolution” in China, a campaign to improve public sanitation conditions, has proven successful and delivered results in hundreds of public and private locations across the country since 2015. Coordination between central and local governments, sustainable financing, and right incentives allowed for a smooth delivery, but funding allocation and “formalism” remain a challenge.
